When I first started calorie restriction with DASH, it was difficult to learn to control my cravings and appetite, so I decided to focus on healthy eating and only gentle exercise at first, rather than try to start to much all at once. Moreover, I was still at a point where exercise seemed to dramatically increase my appetite and control was of utmost importance. A year after beginning a calorie restricted DASH diet at approx 1300-1400 cals per day, I was comfortable and ready to take my exercise to the next level, from hiking to running.
